The 4th Of July celebrates our country’s independence in 1845.
Kirsten Larson is from the Minnesota Territory and was born in 1845. In the book “Kirsten Saves The Day,” she saves the Fourth of July. Back then, they celebrated the 4th of July with parades and fireworks. The flag they used to celebrate was a 31-star flag. That means that in 1845, there were only 31 states in the United States. For the 4th of July, Kirsten was selling pies to offer at the town celebration, and a lot of goods would be made and sold there.
There are many differences in how we celebrate the 4th of July in 2024 compared to 1845. In Kirsten’s book, they celebrated by selling items at a market, but now we don’t do that anymore. It’s fascinating to note that our flags differed because we did not have as many states as we do today. Now, our flag has 50 stars on it because of the 50 states. We still have parades and fireworks today, but we have advanced technology. The fireworks now are not just more significant and more powerful but also brighter, thanks to our technological advancements. Fireworks today are to celebrate the 4th of July but also any celebration you might have. The parades are much bigger now, too, because of how much more people we have now.
Here’s a visual representation of the 31-star Flag, which was used from 1851 to 1858 and was a symbol of the United States during Kirsten’s time.
