Every day it is important to get outside and be in touch with nature, but on Earth Day we get an extra reminder to be conscious about it and think about our impact on it. The earth needs our help as climate change and pollution are in full force. One way people are helping to fight the effects of these is through conservation work. Conservation means protecting nature and natural resources ensuring they are saved for people to have and enjoy for many years to come. Over the years American Girl has brought awareness to conservation efforts through creating characters who practice conservation, like Lea.
In her story, Lea travels to Brazil with her family. Her brother Zac is studying the rainforest there and Lea’s family goes to spend time with him. While there Lea makes a new friend, overcomes her fear of the water, and falls in love with nature photography. Nature photography is a form of photography where people use things they find in nature, like animals, plants, and landscapes, to be the subjects of their pictures. It is a great way to share the beauty of nature with others.
Sharing nature with others is a very important part of conservation. Not everyone is able to experience nature the same way. Some people live in cities where nature is found in parks, while others live in the country where they are surrounded by farms, and still others live in the desert where the weather is extreme. Being able to share these different experiences with others allows them to feel like they are a part of them too. It allows them to fall in love with the earth. People are much more likely to help conservation efforts if they know, care about, and love nature. When Lea shares her nature photography from Brazil, she is able to make people care about and want to protect the Brazillian rainforest. And you can do the same thing in your neighborhood!
