Mary’s Day at the Spa by Mackenzie

September 20, 2018 by GirlAGain

Her story starts on a bright Friday morning. Mary gets up and gets dressed quickly, excited because today is her 10th birthday and she gets to go to the spa for the first time!  Her American Girl doll, Julie, gets to come with her as well! “Are you up, Mary?” Mom calls “It’s time for breakfast.”

“Yes, Mom!” Mary grabs Julie from her bed. “Are you as excited as I am, Julie?”  Mary rushes down stairs to see that mom prepared her favorite breakfast, chocolate chip pancakes. There was even a place set for Julie!  “Happy Birthday! Are you ready for the spa?” Mom said. Mary nodded, her mouth full of pancake. When she was done, she ran to the car were they drove to the spa. They got to the spa and met Gina who will be taking care of Mary today.  Gina turned to Mary and asked, “and who might this be?” pointing at Julie.

“Julie.” Mary said.

“Well, Miss Mary and Miss Julie, if you follow me.” Gina led them to a small table were bottles of nail polish were laid out. “Do you know what you want?”

“Well, I love the color raspberry and I love my black cat Midnight, so can I have that?”

“Why yes of course!” Gina said happily.  So she painted Mary’s fingernails raspberry with little black cats.

Doll in spa chairAfter she was done, Gina turned to Julie, “Now what do you want? Some hairbrushing?” With a giggle, Mary handed Gina Julie’s hair bush and she got to work. After awhile, Julie’s hair looked like new. There was even a new braid!

Gina said, “I noticed some dirt on her, do you want to get that off?” Mary nodded. Gina carefully washed Julie’s body. She was very careful not to get the body or the face wet. Finally all the dirt came off.  “Here you go, good as new!” They went up to the front.

“Did you have fun?” Mom asked.

“Yes, Lots, But I Think Julie had more fun!”

Girl AGain is not affiliated with American Girl(r) company.

Yes She Can!

Did you know that 80% of adults with autism are unemployed? We created our boutique specifically to help develop transferable job skills for young women with autism. Our trainees at Girl AGain sort, clean and prepare the merchandise, price it, and display it in our shop. Our trainees learn about marketing, merchandising, retailing, customer service, and inventory acquisition in addition to appropriate workplace behavior, research, collaboration and decision-making. We have staff who manage our accounting (Quick Books) and our website (WordPress).

Our customers learn about the abilities of people with autism. And hopefully, our youngest shoppers learn about acceptance and inclusion of people with disabilities.
