It is estimated that over 6 million Irish people have emigrated to the United States since 1820. People came to the United States in search of opportunities for a better life. Many construction jobs were offered to men right as they got off the boat. They also became members of the U.S. Army and the police force, and some held political positions.
Nellie O’Malley is a young Irish American girl introduced in the book Meet Samantha. Nellie’s parents are Irish immigrants. When Nellie was a young girl, she worked in a factory and became unhealthy due to the poor working conditions. Nellie was then hired to be a house servant for the Ryland family in Mount Bedford, NY, but was dismissed because of her poor health. After her parents died from the flu, Nellie and her sisters were adopted by Samantha Parkington’s family. Samantha teaches Nellie how to read. She is very skilled at math because she learned how to use money when she had to buy food for her family. American Girl describes Nellie as practical and hardworking.
