December is the time of year when everyone starts celebrating the holidays. Everyone has different ways to celebrate. My family tradition is that we can open one gift before my siblings and I go to bed, and it is our new Christmas pajamas for the next day. On Christmas day we stay in them all day. My grandma used to put a pickle ornament on her tree and hide it. My siblings and I would try to find it, and whoever found it first got to pick out an ornament of her tree to keep. My favorite thing to do around the holidays is to be around family and friends.
I love reading American Girl stories, especially the Holiday ones. Here are some ways my favorite characters celebrate the special season:
Growing up in New York in 1924, Rebecca celebrated Hanukkah with her family by lighting candles and spending quality time together. Although I celebrate Christmas, like Rebecca, I also spend time with my family during the holidays. The holidays are essential for helping us remember and appreciate one another and for bringing us together for a joyous occasion.
Samantha grew up in 1904. She celebrates the holidays with her best friend, Nellie, and her sisters. They do so by writing letters to Santa, hanging their stockings, setting out cookies, exchanging gifts with one another, and giving back to those in need. Both she and I celebrate Christmas similarly. We exchange gifts for both our family and friends. We also make sure we are on Santa’s nice list and bake him treats for when he arrives. The holidays are the best way to remind us to give back to our community and those who genuinely need it by staying in touch with the Christmas spirit.
Josefina, who grew up in 1824, celebrates the holidays by embracing her family’s traditions. She celebrates on Christmas Eve, or as she calls it, “Noche Buena.” She attends Church with her family and enjoys listening to the musicians play traditional Christmas music. She also loves to sing as it reminds her of her mother and helps her feel safe and loved. Like Josefina, I go to Church on Christmas day to think about my blessings and be grateful. I also enjoy listening to Christmas music. Christmas is important to me because it helps me be thankful for everyone around me and the things that I have.
