Today, backpacks are how we carry our books to and from school. Backpacks are used by per-schoolers through college students.
Girls from American history carried their books in different kinds of book bags.
1904
Samantha Parkington carried school items with a strap along with pencils, a notebook, and a math chart. Samantha went to a school called Miss. Cramptons school for girls, for proper young ladies. For a school assignment she wrote about child labor because her friend, Nellie had to work in a factory.
1934
Kit Kittridge’s school bag had a geography reader, multiplication chart, a writing tablet, a pencil box, 6 crayons, a ruler, 2 pencils, a gum eraser, a pen, and her report card all carried in her black leather book bag. It did have big straps so she could put it on her back. Kit wanted to be nothing more than to be a reporter.
1944
Molly McIntire was from the era of World War 2. In her school bag she carried, a 3 ring binder with lined loose leaf paper, a pencil case and erasers, flash cards, an English notebook, and report card. Molly’s school bag was a red cloth book bag and it had a strap that could be a cross body bag.

My own book bag
My personal favorite book bag during high school and college is the rolling book bag mostly because of it’s design and I love that you don’t have to carry so much on you back. They’re less overwhelming, not so heavy and helps you with your posture. This is what I carry in my current rolling backpack:
- my 3 binders for my separate classes
- Art 103
- Communications 111
- And theater 111
- My binder for my list and schedule
- My pencil case
- Lunch
- My IPad tablet
- My journals and diaries
- And flash cards
Gerry Outdoor started to make backpacks for school in the 1960.
What’s your favorite backpack and why?
