Three Generations of Charitable Giving
Recently a customer came into Girl AGain with her mother and grandmother. She brought $25 in cash to donate to Yes She Can for Giving Tuesday. At the same time, her grown-ups each made generous contributions to our organization as well. This second-grader felt very proud of her actions. She said she saved the money from her allowance.
And then the girl looked around the store to see what items she wanted to purchase.
I was very touched by her generosity. I learned that charitable giving is part of their family tradition.
According to the Gallup Poll, 73% of Americans donated money to a charitable cause in 2020. This is down from 2009 when 79% donated to a charity. This led me to reflect on my own experience with charitable giving.
When I was a young child my parents introduced us to philanthropy. We gave away our toys to The New England Home for Little Wanderers. We brought coins every Sunday to religious school for the tzedakah (charity) box. At Halloween, we collected coins for UNICEF.
I thought our Girl AGain fans would enjoy reading this article on raising children to be involved in giving.
