Thanksgiving is the holiday where not only do Americans celebrate the Pilgrims’ arrival but also celebrate with family and friends as a whole. When we talk about Thanksgiving we remember the history of how the Pilgrims arrived at the ‘New World’ on the Mayflower, and how long of a dreadful journey it was for them. Despite some initial hardships, the Pilgrims learned from the Native Americans how to grow crops. Thanksgiving was a celebration of a new abundance of food, people working together, and preparing for the winter ahead.
In the American Girl Kit Kittredge story, Thanksgiving was celebrated during the Great Depression. During this time period, a lot of things were limited. Thanksgiving wasn’t canceled, but the people in the community still came out anyway to celebrate with food and shared laughter and friendship towards each other, and being grateful as to what they already have.
Personally, Thanksgiving is the time to share how grateful I am to have such a wonderful family in my life that shows love, kindness, and caring. I look around me and am thankful for what I have already, and I also love to show an act of kindness by giving canned and boxed foods to the food pantry to help people in need.
Many of our trainees have expressed gratitude for being back in person to continue their program with Yes She Can.
